Standup

The reason why it is called "stand-up" is because the team typically is standing up giving his or her update. The daily meeting prevents a common failure mode of teams, where in the absence of an explicit occasion to share recent information, some critical knowledge may sometimes “fall through the cracks”.

The daily stand-up is a short, daily meeting to discuss daily progress and identify blockers on one's committed user stories (PBIs). This meeting should only last (timeboxed) for 15 minutes - if discussion goes over, additional meeting will need to occur with the respective individuals needed in the conversation.

Outcome: Questions for Team to Answer:

  1. What did you accomplish yesterday? - Quick update on the PBIs you worked on - any callouts or wins
  2. What will you do today?
  3. Any impediments/risks to raise? - If there is anything to raise, the SM, PM, and Pod Leader will bring it up during the Scrum of Scrums with the other leads. Not only will this raise visibility but also inform Senior Leadership (stakeholders, if applicable) in the event further escalation is needed or if additional resources are needed to remediate the issue.

Best Practices:

• Provide short, clear updates on your committed stories - if an issue arises with a part of your work, we will "parking lot" the topic so that all members can have his or her turn.

  • Once everyone shares his or her updates, we will transition to parking lot where other team members can drop from the call unless it affects him or her.

• If a team member is unable to attend standup, have him or her post their updates in the respective team channel.

• During standup or when a team member remembers, add updates/comments in each user story so that SM, PM, Leadership understands the progress of the story especially if it needs to be carried over to the next sprint.

• Though being on video is not enforced, have team motivate each other to get on camera. (this is optional!)
