Standup
The reason why it is called "stand-up" is because the team typically is standing up giving his or her update. The daily meeting prevents a common failure mode of teams, where in the absence of an explicit occasion to share recent information, some critical knowledge may sometimes “fall through the cracks”.
Backlog Refinement
The purpose of Backlog Refinement is for the Product Owner to review with the team items in the "backlog" to review, prioritize, assess, and update progress to "Ready" (this will help with Backlog Health Agile Metric). This ceremony occurs weekly for an hour to ensure that the backlog has enough user stories \~3-6 weeks in advance to prepare for the upcoming sprints.
Sprint Planning
The purpose of sprint planning is for the team to look at the upcoming sprint to define what can be delivered in the sprint and how that work will be achieved. This ceremony occurs on a bi-weekly basis (or before the new sprint starts) and allows the team to review any carry-over user stories, review what was discussed in backlog refinement, identify prioritized user stories, create sprint goal, and review team capacity & velocity.
